Day 438: Chilly Morning

For the first time in a long time, it was a bit chilly this morning. I also got underway late… and I’m posting later.

Gonna be one of those days.

    I’m posting this here in case it’s a general problem. If no one else is seeing it, I’ll take it offline or just put up with it.

    Since 12th July, I’ve been getting errors from my podcast client when it tries to download tommw episodes and I’ve had to download them manually. Previously, it was working fine and the Phaedrus episodes are still auto-downloading without problems. I’ve changed nothing at my end. Is anyone else having similar trouble?

    • Nathan says:

      Does it give you an error, Leila?

      And what are you using for a client. Nothing has changed in the feed on July 12. The files themselves got modified before that when I changed phones, but that was in June.

      • Leila Burrell-Davis says:

        I’m using a (probably) UK-centric client called Radio Downloader , whose primary function is to download BBC iPlayer audio streams and convert them to MP3, but additionally to catch podcasts, until now without difficulty: “Error, unknown error” is what I get when tommw downloads fail.

        I think Tara Li may well be right, especially since I cannot now re-download earlier episodes, suggesting a server configuration change rather than a file format problem.

        I’ll try another client and pursue this with the Radio Downloader author. Is there a particular security reason to block wget? I used it to script the download of a load of past episodes when I first started listening to tommw and wanted to catch up on ones I had missed.

        • Nathan says:

          If it’s using wget, yeah, that’s the problem.

          the wget block comes from a bullet proofing protocol that blocks everything except what wordpress needs to operate.

          I’ve got a couple of choices including moving the archive to a new location (altho changing the links for all those podcast posts sounds grim)…

          For the moment, I’ll pull wget from the line up until I can figure out what the right security statement would be.

          • Tara Li says:

            See, this is what you get for having tech-savvy listeners, and admitting you actually use Linux.

          • Leila Burrell-Davis says:

            The Phaedrus podcasts are still downloading fine. Do the recent server changes not apply to them?

            Nathan, I didn’t mean to start a debugging session here. If you’d rather go and write a novel, that’s fine. We don’t have to solve every little technical problem just because we can’t bear not to.

          • Nathan says:

            No, Leila. TOMMW is under the same nathanlowell.com root but phaedrus is under a different directory structure and the bulletproofing doesn’t extend to the parallel.

            I’ve pulled the restriction on wget — is your podcatcher still not working?

          • Laith says:

            Nate, I was curious so I took a look at your ‘robots’ file. I may be miss-reading but it looks WAY restrictive.

        • Leila Burrell-Davis says:

          Podcatcher still not working, I’m afraid. I’ve put in a bug report with the program’s author and will see if he has any useful suggestions.

          • Nathan says:

            Probably using one of the other prohibited libraries like wwwlib or something.

            I probably need to bite the bullet and move the audio feeds out from under the bulletproofing.

          • Leila Burrell-Davis says:

            I’ve now heard from the program author:

            The reason the downloads are failing is because the server is returning an HTTP 403 (Forbidden) error in response to the request to download the podcast.

            Looks like whoever 'hardened' the website has been a little overenthusiastic - if the requesting user-agent contains the text 'Downloader', this causes a 403 to be returned:

            "Radio Downloader 0.24.2.0" (our normal user-agent) => 403 Forbidden
            "Radio Dld 0.24.2.0" => 200 OK
            "Downloader" => 403 Forbidden

            If you'd like to contact the podcast author with the above info (or send them a link to this bug), hopefully they will be able to tweak their rules to allow Radio Downloader to access their podcasts.

            If that’s not clear (not sure I used the best tags), the bug is at .

          • Nathan says:

            Odd. But I’ll look at it.

            The problem is that I’ve stored the media for TOMMW in the same parent as nathanlowell.com and it’s stomping on everything.

  2. memline says:

    Kohlrabi (daikon radish, or any other firm summer veggie, ie, cucumber, etc.), rice vinegar (has to be rice vinegar as it is mild tasting and smooth), and a small amt of Tamari. Cut up the veggie and soak a day or so in sauce. Has the taste of the tamari, but faint, and is delicious. Use as snack, in salads, or as a pickle type condiment. Very good, not much salt, hard to resist and easy to get veggie requirement in if short on it.

    Re: ZC Worth waiting for to have it right!

  3. Doc Coleman says:

    Corn tortillas are uncooked. They are meant to be deep fat fried for hard tacos. You don’t want to eat them raw. They’re nasty. And they go bad quickly.
